4th grade in Sandgerði

Fourth-grade students learn about the ocean and its biota.

In fourth grade, students learn about the ocean and its biota. With this in mind, the class visited the knowledge center in Sandgerði last Monday. During their visit, students heard the story of French polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot—one of the most remarkable explorers of the last century—who perished along with his ship, the Pourquoi-pas?, and its crew off the coast of Mýrar in 1936.

Students also explored the natural history exhibit, which features more than 70 taxidermied animals, using the interactive tablet app Fróðleiksfúsi to learn about each specimen on display.

The highlight, however, was the live sea creatures: students got to examine and touch sea stars and observe live crabs of all sizes up close.

The trip was a great success, and the students represented their school exceptionally well.
